Steve is from a family of singers and concertina players going back to the 1890's. He has a fine store of songs and is one of the most highly rated concertina players in the British Isles. Come and be mesmerised by his easy style and be ready to join in. His latest CD ‘The Rim of the Wheel’ has had rave reviews. It is great to have Steve back at the club in our 51st year.
Speldosa make their first visit to the club. They are made up of Rosie Calvert (The Teacups), Nicola Beazley (Ceol Tire) and Emma Durkan (Caleb Major Band), who are all recent graduates of the Newcastle University Folk and Traditional Music degree. With fiddle, clarsach, hammer dulcimer and vocals, they play an unusual combination of beautifully delicate traditional and contemporary tunes, along with gutsy feminist songs and original compositions.
Jane and Amanda Threlfall possess a rare talent. They breathe new life into traditional songs in a way that makes you feel that it was always meant to be like this. Although accomplished musicians, they’re aided and abetted by the group’s third member, Roger Edwards, a musician who can do sensitive song accompaniment or positive English music with equal relish and skill. Always popular guests so come early.
The Bailey Sisters are a trio comprising Shelley Rainey, Karen Dyson & Aly Rainey and have been performing since 2009. Karen plays guitar and Aly fiddle but the trio are particularly known for their acapella singing. They perform songs ranging from 13th Century to the present day including some of their own compositions. Come and give them a warm welcome at the Diamond.
Due to ill health, Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher are unable to appear.
Granny's Attic is a young folk trio from the English Midlands, with members Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (melodeon, concertina, and vocals), George Sansome (guitar, vocals) and Lewis Wood (fiddle, mandolin, vocals). They play a variety of traditional folk music from the British Isles and further afield, complemented by original compositions. Granny’s Attic was nominated for the BBC Young Folk Award 2014. Their debut EP, 'Mind the Gap', was released in late 2011 and their first album, 'Better Weather' was released in early 2014. They imbue the tradition with a freshness, and vitality while respecting the source.
