Tom plays fiddle sings and is a firm favourite at the club with his superb playing and easy-going singing style he captures an audience right away. Loved, respected and envied by musicians up and down the country in equal measure. Tonight, he is bringing along a fine Scottish piano player Michael Biggins. I saw them both at Whitby festival where they wowed a packed pavilion. Can you sing along with them you certainly can?
Mal normally works with her family as the Waite Collective but due to illness at the last minute could not join them on their recent visit to the club. This has given us the chance to welcome her back on a rare solo booking. Her repertoire ranges far and wide and encompasses traditional and self penned numbers; she may even throw in a Music Hall ditty. With her warm personality and easy stage presence it is a joy to welcome her back.
We welcome the return of Clive and Tom, who are both fine singers in their own right, but together A cappella close harmony singing is their forte. With songs of the land and sea, mainly about working people and their trades from both traditional and contemporary sources. They are equally at home in a festival or folk club setting. Will they want you to join in the choruses - you bet?
Mal Waite began singing on the folk scene in the mid-1980s, and one of her very early solo gigs was at one of our earlier venues. She and her daughters, Rebecca and Katrina, always sang together, often while washing up after family meals. From singing informally they moved on to joining her on stage occasionally at clubs or festivals, until it grew into a fully-fledged family band around the turn of the Millennium. They are known for their intricate harmonies, often unaccompanied, though they sometimes feature Mal’s guitar playing, their sensitive choice of songs, and there on stage banter will have you joining along with the choruses.
