We start the new season with Pete Coe who is a versatile performer. He sings both contemporary and traditional, dances and plays (sometimes all together) which can leave you breathless but doesn’t seem to bother him! Pete’s own songs have been regarded as modern classics and are performed the length and breadth of the country often by people who think they are singing traditional songs. He is very popular at the club so come early for a seat.
We have been asked to appear on Carl Chinn's program on radio BBC WM from 12pm Sunday 30th August to celebrate the club's 45th Year.
Colin Pitts first began performing in folk clubs while a student in Swansea in the late sixties. He re-emerged as a serious performer in the 1990’s with a reputation for writing songs that sometimes make you think, sometimes make you laugh and sometimes just make you feel good. Several, including “Jeannie’s Flag”, “Australian Wine” and “Let Her Lie” have been recorded by other singers and it is not unusual to hear them sung in a folk club, festival or on radio. Colin is back after an illness with a new crop of songs and his singing is stronger the ever.
Martin Curtis is paying his first visit to us from his adopted country New Zealand, but is no stranger to the clubs and festivals of this country. His self-penned songs tell of the tales of both the land and the people and his output is such that they have entered into the fabric of the folk scene.
We have only one reason for booking this guy and that is the joy he brings to performing at the club. Benny can call on his vast knowledge of all sorts of song from shanties to songs of his beloved North-East as well those from the music hall era.
He is also an accomplished melodeon player. Choruses? Of course.
